Dear Guest,

The Right Stuff

We were delighted to have Manatee County Commissioner for District 2, Amanda Ballard as our featured speaker Tuesday evening. This was Amanda's first appearance at Manatee Patriots since her election. The turnout was strong as nearly every available chair in the Honeybell Hall was filled with folks anxious to hear from the Commissioner. The audience was certainly not disappointed.

Amanda kicked off off her presentation with a list of campaign promises that she had already fulfilled. She noted that one of the first issues she looked into was how Manatee County became a member of the ICLEI - a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) backed by the World Economic Forum (WEF). She also mentioned her work on controlling explicit material in our libraries and encouraged parents to join the Library Advisory board. And as an example of her fiscal conservatism, rather than building additional libraries at a cost of tens of millions of dollars, Amanda is championing the notion of "Bookmobiles".  These mobile libraries would be updated with the latest technology and represents an economical way of bringing reading materials throughout the county.

Amanda fielded a number of questions spanning a wide variety of issues and concerns.  Her responses were honest, thoughtful and respectful even when she voiced her disagreement.

It was a long presentation - over an hour - but it definitely illustrated that Amanda Ballard has the right stuff to faithfully represent the citizens of District 2.

We have recorded her presentation in its entirety and it may be reviewed by visiting the "Past Meetings Videos" on our website.  To go there now, simply click this link.

"Nefarious" Movie Night Sunday, April 30 at 5:45pm

"Nefarious" is a horror film which is a sad commentary of contemporary life in America.  In it, a convicted serial killer gets a last minute court-ordered psychiatric evaluation on the day of his scheduled execution. The killer surprises the psychiatrist with his claim that instead of trying to avoid his fate, he is in fact a demon who wants the execution to go forward... and further claims that before their brief time together is over, the doctor will commit three murders of his own.

Originally scheduled to conclude this week, the film is now being held over until next Wednesday, May 3.  So we thought it would be fun to organize another Manatee Patriots "Night At The Movies".  Our plan is to attend the Sunday, April 30 showing at 7:30pm at AMC 20 Theater in Bradenton (off of US 301).  And as we did for "2000 Mules" will be meeting at Verona Pizza located at Manatee Towne Center, 5257 33rd Street E off of SR 70 at 5:45pm.

A Possible Future For Mixon Fruit Farms

This week, the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners had voted to  continue consideration to designate the Mixon Fruit Farms property as a Stormwater Park. We are pleased with this decision and we want to extend our appreciation to all those who turned out to voice support for this important effort to preserve Bradenton's heritage.
